No, not in general. It’s a subset of the culture of certain elite prep schools that follow ultra-competitive educational philosophies and have tuitions that ensure only the extremely wealthy can afford to attend.

I went to a prep school in NYC and it was a non-competitive environment with mixed socioeconomic classes and very few snooty kids (some, but very few). My sister went to one of those snooty schools, but very few of the kids there were like that. Still, my parents hated that school and switched her into my school before 7th grade. (And that was a long time ago, when tuition and competition was nowhere near as bad as today.)

Most New York kids go to public school, of course, which is completely different, even in the elite public schools. I had several friends who went to those elite public schools and they came out quite grounded.
